Since the COVID-19 pandemic, we have never spent so much time in our home. Spending quarantine redecorating and rearranging, or maybe you took the time to relax? Now is the time re-evaluate your blinds and the safety measures they have in place. Even though a pandemic has almost passed, looking after your child’s wellbeing is still vital. Keep reading to find out about the importance of Window Blind Safety.
A Word of Caution
Parents and others should always keep window blind cords and chains out of the reach of children and follow the safety instructions. If your current window blinds in your house have been in situ for a while now, it is worth reviewing and considering if there are any likely risks to safety to small children in the house.
Most blinds such as roller, venetian, or vertical will have a looped cord to control them, this closed loop is the main source of danger. A solution to this is to make all cords a minimum height of 1.5m from the ground. It is important to give the measurement from the top of the blind to the ground, the measurement is required for every home, not just those with children. We know the little ones love to climb and explore anywhere they can get to! So, the next solution is to have the cord under tension, this means that the cord is tight with a cleat at the bottom, and the little ones can’t get themselves tangled in them too easily even if they do manage to climb up.
Child Safety Tips
Move beds, cots and furniture away from windows, as well as keeping cords and chains out of reach of children. Make your existing blinds or curtains safe, try to get rid of cords ending in a loop. Please feel free to contact us here at Direct Blinds for further information regarding retro fitting safety devices on existing blinds.
Choosing blinds carefully is very important, time needs to be taken to make the right decision. There are many options available that do not have cords or chains at all. When purchasing blinds ask questions in areas you are concerned about and always read the warning notice on the blind. If you are installing the blinds yourself. Check that written instructions for assembly, installation, use and maintenance are followed to the letter.
How to install safety devices for chain operated blinds
The Tension device reduces the hazards of strangulation and entanglement of young children by limiting access to the chain control. Anchor the Tension Device to the window or wall so that young children cannot pull the cord around their necks.
Position the chain in the Device. Do not twist or cross the chain.
Position the Tension Device on the wall or window frame and mark the hole for drilling. The device should be installed without stretching or pulling down on the chain.
Drill the hold to the depth of the screw provided using a 5.5mm drill bit.
Holding the Tension device upright and in position, as shown, insert and secure the screw through the hole. The screw must be secured into a solid surface.
