Due to the Government’s most recent guidelines about staying indoors, people are turning to Spring Cleaning to keep themselves occupied.
We spend a lot of time finding the perfect window coverings for every room in the house, but window blinds are household furnishings that seem to get cleaned very occasionally.
Cleaning your blinds requires few materials and only takes a few minutes and makes a significant difference to your window coverings.
Cleaning Venetian Blinds
Venetian blinds are a great option if you want to be able to vary the amount of light coming into a room, and control privacy at the same time. However, due to the large number of individual slats that make up the blind, they can attract a lot of dust if not cleaned regularly.
Venetian blinds can be cleaned either on or off the windows. Clean with warm water and an all-purpose household cleaner. Vinegar and water will also do a thorough cleaning job, as well as a window cleaner. Wash each slat gently by hand using a soft cloth. When you have finished one side, do the same on the other side. Then, gently wipe dry.
If the blinds are very dirty, you can take blinds down and give them a more thorough wash. It’s important not to get wooden blinds too wet as this can damage the wood – a rub with a damp cloth, followed by a dry towel to remove any excess moisture, is usually enough to keep them looking as good as new!
Aluminium blinds are easier to wash, which is one of the reasons they make a great choice for bathrooms and kitchens. Clean them with a soft brush and warm water, perhaps including a little detergent or vinegar. Hang the blinds up to dry before you put them back in place on the window.
Cleaning Vertical Blinds
Vertical blinds need very little maintenance to stay looking good, as the louvres simply hang down so don’t trap dirt and dust easily. Vertical blinds are best dusted with a microfibre cloth or static dusting brush, to pick up and remove surface dust. A quick going over regularly will stop any dust from settling and working its way too deeply into the fabric. If the slats have been soiled in any way, take them down and wash them by hand.
If you want to wash vertical blinds, ensure to use only cold or luke-warm water. Using a small amount of water, dampen the blinds and rub gently with a soft cloth to remove stains. Once the blinds are clean, remove as much excess water as possible by patting with a soft towel and then hang to dry.
Cleaning Roller Blinds
Roller blinds rarely get very dirty; they are usually rolled up during the day and so can avoid marks and staining. When used regularly, the action of rolling and unrolling the blinds generally helps to scatter dust.
However, it’s still important to keep on top of things to ensure they stay looking their best. So how can you clean roller blinds? Start by gently vacuuming the blinds. Then spot clean with a soft clean cloth and mixture of mild detergent and warm water. Try to absorb as much moisture as possible from the blinds using a towel, and leave rolled out vertically to dry before rolling up again only once completely dry.
For tougher stains, use your favourite household stain fighter. Do a test patch first and let dry for 24 hours to make sure the fabric doesn’t fade.
Cleaning Roman Blinds
It is easy to clean Roman blinds with a cloth or brush. You can also use a vacuum to remove any dust from the fabric using a fabric attachment if you have one. Ensure your vacuum is on a lower suction setting to prevent damaging the blinds. The more often you vacuum your blinds, the less extensive cleaning they will require down the road.
If the blinds are heavily soiled and their material allows traditional washing, then they can be washed in a washing machine with a mild detergent. It may be a good idea to make use of the “delicate” setting in this case and avoid any spinning or tumble-drying, instead hang the blinds out to dry naturally. Make sure to remove all detachable plastic attachments beforehand.
